Mexican Fiesta

Sombreros, Tacos, Tequila… Floor!

Mexican Night -good times guaranteed.

Lively, colourful and vivacious by nature, a Mexican themed dinner is also a guaranteed hangover.

From the cheap decor, flowers, menu, cocktails, to dressing Nacho in his sombrero, I loved every bit of our Mexican Fiesta.

Some highlights, which I’ll cover in this post, were:

  • Mexican-Inspired Flower Table

  • Passionfruit Daiquiris

  • Nachos (the edible kind, not my baby boy)

  • Jalapeno Poppers

This was such a fun dinner party and I can’t wait to do it again. Here’s where I got all the supplies from:

  • Flowers: Tiong Bahru Market (I ALWAYS go to the first uncle on the left upon entry. Great prices!)

  • Food: For the Nachos, Jalapenos and Tacos & Churros, I got the spices and veggies from La Mexicana.

  • Cocktails: For the Lime Margaritas and Passion Fruit Daiquiris, we bought the alcohol from Amazon Prime.

  • Mexican Decor: Sombreros from Spotlight. Table Runner and ‘Taco Bout A Party’ signage from Shopee. Cactus from Hooga.

Here’s some highlights of the night, happy reading!

Mexican-Inspired Floral Table

My inner drag queen had a lot of fun with this colour palette.

Purple, fuchsia, hot pink with a hint of yellow, these were the bold vibrant colours Pinterest inspired me to use. I also added a fake cactus and some candles. Here’s what flowers I bought at the market:

  • Fuchsia and Hot Pink Carnations

  • Purple Orchids

  • Forsythia (yellow branches)

  • Green leaves with red outline (don’t know the name).

I am not a trained florist, so I don’t really know the ‘rules’ of putting together a floral table arrangement.

However here was my thought process:

  • Start with purple orchids, as they are the focal point and place them in the middle.

  • Then add the ‘base’ green leaves on either side of the purple orchids.

  • Add the cactus in the middle surrounded by pink chrysanthemums.

  • Finish off by adding thin yellow branches (Forsythia) throughout the design and add some candles.

Passion Fruit Daiquiris

Frothy, sweet and refreshing.

Passion fruit brings back so many childhood memories, as I used to have it with vanilla ice-cream after school on a hot Summer day. I almost wonder if it makes this cocktail sweeter for me.

Anyways, today, I prefer it with Rum!

My partner made this recipe (serving for 2):

  • 2 Passion Fruits

  • 2 shots of Rum

  • 1 Lime

  • 1/2 shot of Sugar Water

  • Ice

Blend all the ingredients above and enjoy!

Nachos (Meat and Veggie Options)

I made two versions, one with lentils and one with beef. Both were cooked with Taco Seasoning from La Mexicana. I just followed some recipes online for the basic Nacho stack:

  • Tortilla chips

  • Meat/ Lentils (Cook first in a pan with Taco seasoning and black beans)

  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese

  • Chopped Olives

  • Chopped Pickles

  • Chopped Tomatoes

  • Few Tortilla chips and more cheese for the topping.

Bake for 15 mins @ 180 deg.

Jalapeno Poppers

I just like saying Jalapenos, ‘ha-la-pen-nos’.

I’ve never cooked Jalapenos before this dinner, so when I saw them on La Mexicana I had to try my luck! Found some recipes online and this was the jist of it it.

Ingredients:

  • Jalapenos

  • Cream Cheese

  • Cheddar Cheese

  • Chives

  • Lemon

  • Paprika

Method:

  1. Cut Jalapenos in half, bake for 10 mins @ 180 deg.

  2. Mix cream cheese, grated cheddar cheese and finely chopped chives. Squeeze a bit of lemon to taste.

  3. Stuff Jalapenos with cheese and bake for another 10 minutes.
